Navajo Child Drive Appeal 2016

Navajo girlWhy you should give . . .

… a 7 year-old child told one staff member that all she wants is a mother….

A Message from Kathy Spitz

Children receiving presentsThis is the 24th season of our Navajo Child Drive which began as a small project with our team of special needs specialists, addressing the absence of Santa from the poorest of our poor families who had at least one special needs child receiving services from us.

This Year’s Drive:

Santa’s helpers are “gettin’ busy” in Eastern Navajo Area. Our 2016 Goal is to reach 200 families & 800 children.

We work with knowledgeable staff to identify 10-25 families at each of our 14 schools that cover 10,000 square miles. “Wish Lists” from our children have included: dolls & accessories, games, toys, art & school supplies, backpacks, and sports balls.

In 2015…

  • We reached 206 families, 682 children and 75 grandparents.
  • You provided $10,283 in monetary donations, as well as
    • hand-made quilts
    • blankets
    • hoodies
    • clothing
    • stuffed animals
    • toys
    • toys, and
    • personal care items

These children need youAs Christmas comes toward the end of the month, most of our families are out of money and short on food. New Mexico ranks within the 10 worst states for Childhood Hunger, with a Hunger Rate of 1:4. Our estimates for hungry children living ON the reservation is 1:3.

Our Christmas Food Basket contains a fresh ham roast, canned vegetables, onions, potatoes, cookies, apples and oranges, coffee, tea and a supply of staples, which is locally known as the “Sheepherder’s Special.” We find room for a tablecloth & one fleece blanket to sit on top of each basket.

We are proud of our partnership with Family2Family, a national food program based in NY which focuses on developing relationships between families with more, to families with significantly less. And we appreciate the great support from our Sponsors – businesses and organizations that donate services and monetary support. But we desperately need additional “Elves” whether they are individuals, organizations, or businesses. We look to develop year round support for some of our most destitute families.

We are all volunteers, therefore all funds raised and items received go directly to our families. Our only overhead is postage, paper, and ink as well as wrapping supplies and fuel costs.

Please Give

2015 RecipientsOur target Special Needs age population is birth through 18 (all children and teens, 8-15, must be in school).

Our 2016 Goal is to reach 200 families & 800 children.

Try and recruit one more sponsor for our families. If you want copies of our information DVD to help, we have them ready to ship. We have had Classrooms, Church Groups, Work Groups, Hospital Staff, a couple of Corporations, as well as other very diverse folks join us over the years. Don’t be left out; support the Children & Families of the Navajo Child Drive.

We cannot do it without you.

Please help this child enjoy ChristmasMost of our sponsors would rather we do the shopping, (which saves on shipping costs & taxes for you) but we are also supportive of those individuals who want to shop themselves. We can also help if you are interested in becoming ”Santa” for particular families. Just let us know. We put wrapped and tagged “Santa” boxes together for children, birth through 18, for under $20.

Your gift of $160 sponsors a family with 4 children (includes our Holiday Basket.)
